Random Facts

To be sure, a very tiny percentage of the human population is actually tone deaf. If you cringe when a performer sings a horribly flat or sharp note, then you are not tone deaf. Just because you can’t hit a certain note doesn’t mean your are tone deaf – it just means you need practice.

When a singer is singing an A above middle C, the vocal folds are vibrating at 440 times per second. To give some perspective, think of the hummingbird flapping its wings. Pretty fast, right? The fastest a hummingbird can flap its wings is near 90 flaps per second. That means the vocal folds are vibrating almost 5 times as fast as the hummingbird’s wings! The human vocal cords are amazing!
